Why convert a QVD to CSV
A QVD is the binary table format Qlik writes to disk. It is fast for Qlik to reload, but nothing else reads it, so the data is stuck there the moment you need it in Excel, in a database, in a Python script or in a hand-off to someone who does not use Qlik. CSV is the format everything accepts, which makes it the usual escape hatch.
The usual alternative is to reload the QVD in Qlik and run a STORE ... INTO ... (txt) statement. That needs a Qlik licence, access to the right environment and a script per file. This converter does the same job from a browser tab: it decodes the QVD header, symbol table and index table itself, then writes the CSV locally.
How to convert a QVD file to CSV
- 1
Open the QVD file
Drop your .qvd file onto the converter or pick it from your computer. Your browser reads it directly, so nothing is uploaded and there is no upload size limit.
- 2
Check the fields before exporting
The dashboard shows every field, its number of distinct values, the total record count and a preview of the first rows, so you can confirm this is the table you want as CSV.
- 3
Click Export CSV
The CSV is written in your browser and saved to your downloads folder, named after the original QVD file. Field names become the header row.
What you get in the CSV
- Header row of field names, taken from the QVD exactly as Qlik stored them.
- RFC 4180 quoting: commas, quotes and line breaks inside a value are escaped, so the file survives a round trip through Excel or any CSV parser.
- UTF-8 text, so accented characters and non-Latin scripts stay intact.
- Empty cells for null values, matching what Qlik shows as missing data.
QVD to CSV: frequently asked questions
How do I convert a QVD file to CSV?
Open the .qvd file in this converter and click Export CSV. The conversion runs in your browser, so you do not need QlikView, Qlik Sense, a script or an account.
Can I convert a QVD to CSV without Qlik installed?
Yes. This tool reads the QVD binary format itself, so it works on any machine with a modern browser, including one that has never had QlikView or Qlik Sense installed.
What does the exported CSV look like?
It is a UTF-8 file with a header row of field names, a comma between values and one line per record. Values containing a comma, a double quote or a line break are wrapped in double quotes, and inner quotes are doubled, following RFC 4180.
Will the CSV open in Excel?
Yes. The file is comma-separated UTF-8 text, which Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers, pandas, Power BI and any database import tool can read. For very large tables, Excel stops at about 1,048,576 rows, so consider Parquet or a database instead.
How big a QVD can I convert to CSV?
Large files work: a QVD of about 10 million rows exports to a CSV of more than 1 GB in the browser. The limits are your browser's memory and your free disk space, not an upload timeout.
Is the QVD to CSV conversion free?
Yes, completely free, with no row cap, no watermark and no registration. Your file is never uploaded, so nothing is stored on our side.
